Looong weekend. With little sleep.

I haven't gotten much done since about mid-week due to the Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday. Things should settle down early this week, though, and I'll be back in routine. I did get a piece done the other night, before all the holiday foofaraw started, and here it is. I'm also working on a isometric piece, probably a very long and involved one, that I'll keep updating here.

In the upcoming week I'll be posting about how I feel our work should be valued by clients. I tend to be too wordy and I'm spending some time editing it down.

365 Project.

I've decided to start a 365 Project. Sort of. I'm going to shoot for a piece every day but I may end up skipping a day here and there. Like today. Not sure if I'll get something done before bed.
But here's yesterday's work. Behold! I decided to start the project after chatting with an old friend about upping my game and learning new processes and techniques.  My goal is to fine tune my process, learn new techniques and get to know Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on a much deeper level. Some nice new art would be great, too. I hope you'll join me on this journey.
I'm going to start talking here more about the path I'm on to become more dependent on my art for income. It's an entirely new idea for me and one that I'm struggling with. I'll try to keep it interesting.

I won the challenge!

Well, not really. Actually, I think I did because Ivan never showed any of his work. So by default I win because I'm better at it than he is anyways.
Last summer just as I was to begin my undoubted beat-down of Ivan at 3D, I took ill and was left fatigued for much of the remainder of the summer. I was not only cheated out of being creative, I was cheated out of enjoying the local renaissance fair. I go with a friend every year and our goal is to eat the worst food possible all day until we can't stand it anymore. We also shop for pirate clothes, inspect various pelts with a keen and practiced eye, walk around a lot, and eat anything that comes on a stick. We usually spend the day. I was tired after a couple hours. I was tired a lot last year. I'm sure you can understand my disappointment.

So here's to cranking things out this summer.

Friend and future husband Ivan (he doesn't know it yet! SSHHHHH!!) has challenged me to model a vehicle in 3DS Max. I chose the F4U Corsair because I just love the look of the plane.

I'm gonna thump Ivan but good.

I decided to remove the bus model I was working on. Nothing more was going to be done with it. No one will miss it.

You don't know what I'm talking about? Exactly.

Another friend that inspires me

Just wanted to post-a-post about Adrienne Norris and her work. It's energetic and dynamic, and her art compels me to sit down and try something in ink or acrylic, both mediums I'm not quite comfy in right now. Adrienne's art is often from life and it conveys that energy, almost effortlessly. Go take a look - Adrienne Norris

I've updated with a couple more sketches from last night/today. I'm taking a suggestion from Ivan to put the entire page from the book up instead of just individual drawings. We'll see how it works out.

Take a look - BEHOLD! THE SKETCH PAGE!

People that inspire me.

Rather than add a links page, I think I'd rather just post-a-post from time to time about the artists around me that keep me going and push me to just be a better artist.

Diana Connolly
Diana is my kindred spirit. If I hate something at the moment, it's a pretty safe bet she's hating it right then, too, from a thousand miles away. A great artist whose work I've been in love with since our first class together at AiC. Not looking at her website just means you're denying your eyes a few moments of bliss.

Ivan Garcia

Ivan is the man I would marry if he liked men and I were allowed to marry another man in Colorado. For the time being, he's the guy that pushes me so hard to be a better artist that it really pisses me off sometimes. And that's exactly what I need. Enthusiastic, passionate and prolific in his work, Ivan sets a standard. A crazy, scattershot standard sometimes, but a standard just the same. Go check out his work and join me in my crusade to stop him from shading noses.

Raul Ramos
I just met Raul. I'm taking him on as my mentor. Why? Well why the Hell not? His art is excellent and his ability to sit still while working is a nice counterpoint to Ivan's boundless energy. It's downright Zen.

Elliot Cowan
Friend on Facebook and fellow cescan, Elliot's work effortlessly illustrates the kind of absolute whimsy that I'm such sucker for. It definitely reminds me how important it is to develop my own style. Take a look and enjoy.
(And pay particular attention to The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead & Roundhead on Vimeo.)

I've added a "sketch" page to encourage me to share unfinished work now and then. Look for updates soon. All eight of you.

Also about to start a mammoth summer project with a group of fellow artists with the purpose of developing some strong portfolio pieces for the CTN Animation Expo (http://www.ctnanimationexpo.com/) this fall in Los Angeles. More to come on that as well, as things develop.

The story so far.

My original attempt at the Micro Center logo wasn't working, so I poly modeled it instead. I thought I could get away with using curves then converting to a mesh, but that created all sorts of control problems. The result is in WIP. This will mean another crack at the gaming logo as well.

I hope to get another project started this week. Nothing like having four balls in the air.

    Ron Toole

My name is Ron. People call me "Ron" for short. I'm a digital artist living in Denver and I'm eager to create something for you. And you. And you, too!
While I love Denver, I'm itching to get moving again and would be open to moving somewhere near a beach. Or at least somewhere near more work.
